Almost every moderation disaster is a decision that was never made in advance, taken live, in front of an audience, by a tired person.
Three or four plain sentences in the channel description do most of the work. They give moderators something to point at, and they stop every borderline call from becoming a negotiation about what you personally find acceptable.
Moderators hesitate when they are unsure whether you will back them. Telling them explicitly that a wrong timeout is fine and can be reversed is what turns a title into actual coverage.
Follower-only and slow modes, link restrictions, and word filters cost nothing while a channel is small and are already familiar when it is not. Turning them on mid-crisis is far harder.
Arguing with a removed viewer hands them the audience they came for. Remove, move on, and take any real appeal to a message where nobody is watching.
